Official Rules: cost is paramount

2. The second most important rule for the Scottish Cyclist is cost. Kit and equipment shall always be selected for best value. Under no circumstances shall excessive expense be paid to overtly stylish kit. It is acceptable to pay higher amounts for quality kit or components for their longevity, but never for reasons of aesthetics.

I am currently the cycling equivalent of “Man at C&A”. That is, “Man at Wiggle”. You cannot argue with the value of their own-brand kit, it’s a fraction of the big-name brands & I haven’t yet found something that I wasn’t happy with.

As for Rapha? I just don’t get it – which probably means that I’m not their target audience anyway ;-) I believe Rapha’s latest advertising campaign is “Rapha, for when you just have too damn much disposable income”.

Rapha is a case in point. I have tried on the Classic Road Jacket and it was absolutely lovely. Granted, it is made with functionality in mind- it’d probably last for years, and provide comfort in bad conditions (desirable in the eyes of the Scottish Cyclist).

But. It is very expensive. And the Rapha products are designed with style given equal, if not more importance than functionality, certainly at the expense of cost.

Having seen a rider or two kitted out in lots of Rapha, it did give the impression of trying just a little too hard. For these reasons it is very hard for the Scottish Cyclist to be comfortable with Rapha.
