Official rules: ridiculously stylish eyewear

13. It should go without saying that ridiculously stylish eyewear should not be worn at any time. Eyewear should be cheap clear glasses to avoid rain and road-dirt, except when the sky is cloudless (generally only in July and September). Glasses may be worn under helmet straps and headband or cycle cap, to avoid losing them.

Disagree. A real Scottish cyclist never wears eyewear. Often they have a genuine glass eye though…

bit sad reposting twitter comments on my own blog but hey, i need to record them for posterity, and to ponder amending this rule.

velocast [S] said: “No, you need dark lenses to hide the fear when riding past the 'neds' ;-)

@bazzargh: “no glasses? Then I can't see! Mind you, most of the time just now its tipping down and I can't see anyway”

@rockinboy: “does the rules include a heavy bevvy (and cigar) before Synday long ride?”

Clarification: if one is surrounded by nitpicking, style-obsessed Euro wannabees, glasses could be worn over helmet straps to minimise 'fashion commentary'.

However the practicality of glasses-under-straps should be recognised: this can prevent the glasses from falling or becoming dislodged by vibrations from Scotland's bumpy, potholed roads.
