Pic of the day: Millar helps Farrar win at the Vuelta

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Tyler Farrar won Stage 5 of the Vuelta, beating Mark Cavendish in the process (for once this season!). Below his teammate David Millar congratulates him. Millar is normally part of the lead-out but he came in 3 minutes down- not sure why.

The pic is by Italian photographer Sirotti- his ‘big photos’ are regularly featured on steephill.tv and are always absolutely excellent. Click the image for Steephill’s Vuelta coverage.

Hopefully Millar will not tire himself out too much leading out Americans for sprints and climbs, so he is still in good shape for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli.

Scottish Tribute To Laurent Fignon

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Laurent Fignon died today aged 50, of cancer. Tributes have been made all across the world.

I wanted to look at Fignon’s greates achievements from a Scottish perspective, and his 1984 Tour win stands out- because it was the year in which Robert Millar won the polka dot jersey.

Below you can see Fignon celebrating winning the yellow jersey, and Robert Millar just on the edge of the shot. The image links to l’Equipe’s photo tribute to Fignon’s career -click on it for 24 brilliant images.

Edmond Hood writes an account of the 1984 King of the Mountains on Pez Cycling News, where Millar’s closest challenger for the polka dot jersey was Fignon himself.

[edit 01/11/10]
I couldn’t really claim to have watched Fignon when he was racing, so last night I was searching for any interviews where Robert Millar comments on Laurent Fignon. This morning Cyclingnews got his thoughts, and he provides a fitting tribute to the man and the sportsman in the link above.

Pic of the day: Drummond Trophy 1960s

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

A fantastic picture from the Drummond trophy was posted on the Braveheart forum by John McBrearty.

The pic shows Fraser Connell, near the top of the Cathkin Braes, on the old circuit of the Drummond Trophy. The riders behind are Hector McKenzie (Douglas CC) and Norrie Drummond of Glenmarnock Wheelers. It’s thought to be 1964 or 1965. Norrie Drummond’s father was the sponsor of the Drummond Trophy.

The Braveheart thread includes nostalgic memories of the circuit before digressing to discuss who the most stylish Scottish rider of all time was. That’s a question I have been meaning to ask for a while, but didn’t feel qualified to ask- check out the thread for more.

Many thanks to John McBrearty for use of the pic. John describes himself as Formerly of the Glenmarnock Wheelers, now with Velo Allegro, Long Beach, CA USA.

[edit 02/10/10]
John McBrearty emailed me back to confirm some of the information and add a bit more. He said- I was young, 14 or 15, at the time, but I was actually at many a winter Drum-Up where Hector was. – it really is beyond due that I do a piece on Drum-Ups…

Interview: Mark Young Scottish Cycling coach

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Mark Young is a Scottish cycling coach but he is also Scottish Cycling coach.

Scottish Cycling coach Mark Young

How did you first get into cycling?
I have been cycling since 1984; I did BMX freestyle till 1991. Once when I was riding an MTB between work I stumbled across a time trial. I did TT’s and road racing mostly, in the era when Graham Moore (former VC Olympia, now Stirling Bike Club vet) and Neil Cameron (Falkirk BC, former Scottish Champion) were top dogs.

What were your best results?
My personals are 21.53, 54.01, 1.51.30, and 4.07.59. Best results in road racing were a stage win in the Forres Easter stage race and two 5ths in the Tour of the Kingdom and Speyside – always up a hill!!

What led you to coaching then?
In 1999, with marriage and children taking more of a priority, I decided to find ways of making more of my training time. This led me to coaching, and after reading Joe Friel’s Training Bible, I wanted to learn more. I took the British Cycling Club coach award and was subsequently asked by Graeme Herd at SC to work with some of the Under 23s; Gary Hand and Dave Smith come to mind.

You seem to have got the coaching bug pretty quickly…
I gave up my job as a manager of a Ceramic Tile Store and went full-time doing coaching. I had paying clients and the rest of my wage was from the SC work. Now this is where things get interesting, since I was looking for some coach admin software and stumbled across TrainingBible.com. The long and the short of it is, that I became friends with Joe, Joyce and Dirk Friel, and have even had Joe and his wife over to Scotland for some coaching work. I still keep in touch with them even after 6 years or so.

When I first met you, you were a development coach- how did that come about?
In 2006, Graeme Herd left the SC and it was all change in the direction of the funding. An opening in development came up and I grabbed the opportunity. This is where my work with Donald Maclean and the merry band of volunteers began, and Wallace Warriors was born.

But then you moved towards working with the top athletes?
With Dehli 2010 looming large, in 2009 the Elite Athlete Programme was restarted, Graeme Herd once again at the helm. I applied for a support coach role and restarted my working relationship with Herdy once again. The support coach role is a secondment, and in October (post Delhi I think), unless funding is forthcoming, I will once again become a Regional Development Coach.

The Warriors are a strong part of Stirling Bike Club- any thoughts on the local and youth scene?
The future for the kids in Wallace Warriors is looking good, they have an excellent coaching team, and with talent like Jane Barr, Jack Barrett, Rob Wilkins and Eddie Addis, SBC is well represented in the ranks of the elite. I do hope that funding will make it possible to support an extended programme of support for the Jnrs (u23s and women would be nice too), and with initiatives like the Braveheart Fund, it will be possible to help our boys and girls reach their potential.

Dehli 2010: what do you think Scotland can achieve?
The cycling team for the games is huge, possibly the biggest ever assembled to represent Scotland. With previous medallists and current top performing elites the potential for medals in Delhi is there, however, lets not forget that the Games have countries like Australia, Canada and England to name a few who will make the standard of competition extremely high. Our medal haul from Melbourne was the best we have had so far and it will be a tall order to match or exceed this. Personally I think a few surprises may be on the cards.

Many thanks to Mark for this interview.

Freeride Scotland

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

I’m a road rider primarily and that comes through in the content of this blog. However I used to mountain bike a lot more when I was younger, and I still appreciate almost all forms of cycling. Scotland has some great natural and man-made playgrounds when it comes to off-road cycling as this youtube vid from Freeride Scotland shows. The track is pretty cool too.

More Endura rumourmongering!

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

This morning I saw another piece about Endura Racing from French blog Velochrono, which seems to be more good news, this time about Alexandre Blain.

After a period of time considering a change of team, Alexandre Blain will continue his stay at Endura Racing in 2011. The former Cofidis rider joined the Briditsh squad at the start of the season. Elsewhere, he fell heavily during a slightly stupid incident that he recounts to Velochrono: “It was an unlikely coming together with Iker Camano (new Spanish teammate). We were quietly talking, side by side, when he swerved a little and unbelievably, our pedals, stuck on the same cadence, got caught around each other. He finished his race on the grass and I got flattened on the road. Result: three days of enforced rest, compulsory session at the osteopath and wounds to think about for a little while. But no big concerns, the goal remains to be performing at the top in three weeks, to shine at the Tour of Britain.

I’m not sure if the translation of the part about the pedals is right, but I’m asking some of my French friends to check it.

Alex Blain's profile on Enduraracing.com

Hopefully reposting this stuff won’t annoy anyone but it’s a good chance to show off my French translation skillzz. As Endura grow in stature they will have to deal with more media speculation so putting up with blogger twerps like me could be good practice.

New rider for Endura?

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

I noticed a good tweet from one of the French news sites about Endura. I try not to focus on news on this blog, because I don’t have the time to be up-to-date with everything, and there are many other sites, forums and social media services that do that very well already. But on this occasion I found a juicy snippet that is pretty interesting for Scottish race fans.

Not retained by AG2R La Mondiale, René Mandri has found a new team. Velochrono has learned that the Estonia is going to sign for Endura Racing in the next few hours. At the heart of the British squad, he will find the Frenchman Alexandre Blain, but also Iker Camano (new Spanish signing) or Jack Bauer. (?) Mandri finished the Vuelta 24th in 2007.

So if the rumour is true, Endura continue to bolster their squad with European riders. Hopefully the best Scottish guys will still get the opportunity to ride. Healthy competition for places will be a good thing and should see the level raised another notch or two. But it might also mean fewer chances for guys on the edge of the squad- we saw Gary Hand riding “unattached” at the recent Billy Warnock Super Six race, so he looks to be leaving the team. Good luck to him in the future.

There were two pictures of René Mandri tagged on flickr. One is not very flattering, but the above is pretty good- pic by doevos.

Billy Warnock race

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

On Sunday 15th I raced Falkirk BCs Billy Warnock Memorial Road Race. This year it was part of Scottish Cycling’s Sup6r Six series and was split into A and B events with full fields of 80 riders in each.

The A is for Elite to 3rd category riders and took in 6 laps of a flattish course. It was won by Scottish Champion Evan Oliphant of Endura, after breaking away from the bunch in the final mile or so. The only one who could go with him was Robbie Hassan of Glasgow Wheelers, who by my reckoning is one of the only amateurs to have beaten Endura riders in big road races in Scotland this season. Apologies if I have forgotten anyone there.

Evan Oliphant wins from Robbie Hassan. Click the pic for full A race gallery from Granite City RT.

The B event was my main concern though, taking in 3 laps over 45 miles. From the gun I was simply not ready, not having raced for over 6 weeks. I was totally caught out by the scramble into the first corner and the ensuing pace and spent the rest of lap 1 trying to work my way back up without bursting myself and incurring the wrath of the commissaires. For the 4th cat, juniors, women and V60 riders the steep wee hill at Cowie maybe posed more of a challenge and the bunch was whittled down a bit. I was surprised to find myself not going backwards for once on a climb. Falkirk were active on the front with various riders pushing the pace, and my clubmates Ian King and Graham Moore both had forays off the front.

In the last lap I was feeling OK and reckoned I would be able to get up to the front for the final. However a crash at the roundabout coming into the last couple of miles made the vibe a bit nervous. My teammate young Malcolm Gibson went down- shame, he is a strong rider. I jumped on the wheel of Martin Lonie of Dooleys, who was tipped to win the sprint (and did). I was in the top 20, when in a moment of madness, I instinctively followed the attack of the rider directly in front. I’d seen a break win the race the previous year, and thought a few riders might come. But it was just the two of us, and after a minute, or probably less, we were pulled back. I was now gubbed for the sprint and rolled in at the back of the bunch in 54th. However that was my first proper attack in a race so I was happy to have had a go. Progress.

Craig Hardie, grass track master

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Evan Oliphant won the British 8km Grass Track championship at Richmond- but the king of the grass track in Scotland this summer has been Craig Hardie, having taken the Scottish 2000m title at Halkirk as well as numerous other titles.

This photo shows Craig of Hardie Bikes with the hammer champion and the winner of the 28lb weight throw. Image by James Gunn, who has a professional photography business in Caithness, as well as a good blog with lots of sports photography. Click the pic below to see James’ blog entry for the Halkirk games (available for 2 months).

Next pic was scanned from the Stirling news and is of the Airth Highland Games.

Next two pics taken by me, at Bridge of Allan Highland Games- a massive event with around 10,000 spectators. Craig took three of the races and Stirling Tri rider Andy Turnbull got one. The race pictured is the Dei’l Tak the Hindmost: riders complete several laps (with Hardie handicapped half a lap or so down) until one (the hindmost) is eliminated until only three remain, who sprint out one more lap for the win.

Time Trialling in Ayrshire 1949-1950

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Found these pictures on Flickr from a user called Michael Donnelly aka Shak4720.

This one was captioned Scottish BAR? (Best All Rounder). The race was the Jimmy Hamilton Open ’50′ Irvine 1951. Pictured, I think, is the winner Ken Joy “2.3.43″ (the time? 2h 3mins 43secs?)

This one is E V Mitchell riding in the Fullarton Wheelers CC ’50′, winner again Ken Joy 2.6.52.

George McLachlan confined ’25′ late 40′s early 50′s Irvine.
